On March 4th to 6th 2025 the project tem members Shubha Sathyendranath, Marija Bačeković Koloper, Robert Brewin and Žarko Kovač attended the Workshop on Modeling Primary Production at the Simons Foundation in New York.
The workshop was organized by the Simons Collaboration on Computational Biogeochemical Modeling of Marine Ecosystems and was attended by 25 participants.
The primary objectives of the workshop were to address several critical challenges in the field. These included understanding and reconciling differences between ecosystem simulations and models used to interpret remotely sensed data, examining the influence of community composition on primary production, and identifying tipping points in marine primary productivity.
At the workshop the following talks were given by the project team:
1. Shubha Sathyendranath - What are the Big Questions of the Day?
2. Robert Brewin - Satellite-based Remote Sensing Models
3. Žarko Kovač - History of Primary Production Models
In addition to lectures, which were given in the mornings, the afternoon sessions were devoted to hands-on acctivities. These included primary production model development and data analysis. During the first day the participants engaged with simple theoretical models and applied them in a remote sensing context. The second day was reserved for advanced spectrally resolved models and the third day was reserved for in situ data analysis.
Overall, the Workshop on Modeling Primary Production successfully fostered collaboration and enhanced understanding of primary production modeling. The event addressed contemporary issues such as climate impacts and model uncertainties, providing valuable insights and practical experience for all participants.
